Apropos STEM: Stalin and Soviet mathematics

“The teaching of mathematics in our schools is a suicidal scandal.
How does it go in the University of Newton and Crick? If you get a first in mathematics, you can go on to research;
if you get a good second you will enter banks and hedge funds which are very sophisticated in their mathematics;
if you get a third, you will go teach mathematics.
Overnight Stalin decided that school teachers of mathematics
will be paid as much as university professors and honoured throughout society and he brough on the great revolution in soviet and russian mathematical literacy.”
(George Steiner, in the following (min:ss) 3:14)
